This traditional gift was given to a man’s

sweetheart on their betrothal but also it was

considered a lucky charm, protecting the

wearer against evil eyes.  The Luckenbooth

was so called because it was sold from the

"locked booths" on the Royal Mile adjacent

to St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland, in

the early 1700s.  The Luckenbooth is probably the

most romantic  and lovely symbol in Scotland's

history.
